An Ideal comedy
Posted March 11th, 2009 by Laura-Anne SelbeeWith nothing to do on a freezing cold Tuesday night, I thought an evening at Theatre Calgary’s presentation of An Ideal Husband would be the perfect entertainment, and it was.
LiveRush ticket prices at Theatre Calgary are $20 and available one half hour before the show. As I was about to purchase my rush tickets, a fellow theatre patron came over and offered me her two extra tickets, free of charge. The seats were fantastic, just ten rows from the stage. Whoever that generous woman was, I am very thankful!
Although I did not end up purchasing LiveRush tickets, they would have been available if needed. Weekdays, such as Tuesdays, are usually the last performances to sell-out, so they are generally the best for buying rush tickets for.
The play, written by Oscar Wilde and first premiered in 1895, tells the story of Sir Robert Chiltern, a fine, upstanding politician with a loving wife, who is reminded of a wrong he did at the beginning of his career by a crafty woman trying to blackmail him.
Plenty of witty lines and jokes about marriage and the opposite sexes kept the audience laughing. My favorite character, Lord Goring, played by David Leyshon, did a fantastic job as the “laziest man” who turns out to be one of the most admirable characters (and funniest, too). The costumes and scenery was beautifully designed, and made you feel as though you had travelled back in time.
I would absolutely recommend this play to anyone that enjoys witty humor and a little social satire. An Ideal Husband runs from March 3, 2009 to 22.
Theatre (and ticket prices) to die for
Posted March 10th, 2009 by Laura-Anne SelbeeAfter a quick search through the listing of LiveRush events and its partner’s websites, I decided Vertigo Mystery Theatre’s presentation of Art of Murder was the perfect way to spend a Saturday evening with my sister.
After double checking that there were still tickets available, we arrived at the box office a little less than an hour before the show began. I presented my LiveRush card and student ID, and asked for two tickets.
The woman was fully aware of the program and quickly sold me the tickets without any further question at $15 each, the LiveRush price listed on the website. The entire purchasing process was quick and painless.
With an hour to kill before the show began we wandered to a nearby coffee shop for a pre-show latte.
Upon entering the theatre we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves, not in the back row, but near the middle with an excellent view of the stage. With the LiveRush tickets, the seats nearer to the back are usually the ones available, and the ones that I have come to expect.
As it was my first time attending a Vertigo Mystery Theatre production, I was not sure what to expect. The two-hour play was full of twists and kept the audience laughing with witty humor despite the grim subject matter of murder.
An eccentric artist hiding a secret, his bitter wife, greedy art-dealer, and angry maid, makes up a cast with motives to kill. The show keeps you guessing who is going to die, and who will be the one to do it, right through until the surprising ending where all the clues fit together.
If you want to check it out, the production runs from March 7 to March 29 and is offering LiveRush tickets for $15. As for my next venture, I plan to attend Theatre Calgary’s An Ideal Husband.
